Fighting More or Less

Story Updated: Dec 4, 2012

..kids getting into physical confrontations. But does that rough and tumble way of working out problems happen in the real world?

It would appear the answer is yes...but less often than it used to.

Canadian researchers surveyed more than a half-million adolescents from 30 different countries. Participants were asked how frequently they got into an altercation over the past 12 months.

Overall, physical fights declined in most countries between the first survey in 2002...the second in 2006, and the third in 2010.

Boys reported more physical confrontations than girls, However, as the boys got older, the fights happened less often.

Here in the U.S., nearly 12 out of 100 boys admitted to fighting in 2002. That trend improved in 2006 to just 10 per 100 fighting. But oddly enough, it ticked back up to 10-point-6 of 100 boys battling it out in 2010...when the final results were tallied.

Only Greece, which has had economic challenges....and two areas of unrest -- Latvia and the Ukraine bucked the trend and saw increases in fighting during each of three periods the survey was done.

Switzerland was the country with the least amount of physical fighting...6-point-2 per 100 in 2010.
