Breast Size, Exercise and Cancer Risk

Story Updated: Dec 11, 2013

..and having large breasts may put women at a higher risk of dying from breast cancer. That harsh news is the headline coming out of the National Runners and Walkers Health Study.

The researchers looked at breast cancer mortality in more than 79-thousand women over 11 years. None had a history of breast cancer at the beginning of the study. Each tracked how long they walked or ran each week. During the study, 1-hundred-eleven women died from breast cancer. Digging deeper, those who met the current exercise recommendations were at 41-point-5 percent lower risk for breast cancer death than those who didn't exercise enough.ÊÊÊA preventive dose of brisk walking averaged 7 miles per week...and 4 and 3/4 miles for runners.

Breast size also matters. Those who reported being a C-cup were at 4-times greater risk of breast cancer death, and those with a D-cup or larger were 4-point-7 times greater risk....as compared to those with a smaller, A cup.

All the more reason for women of all shapes and sizes to get moving for better health.
