250K grant for downtown Binghamton improvements

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamon) The 2012 New York State Main Street Grant program awards the Binghamton Local Development Corporation, or BLDC, $250,000 to make various improvements downtown.

The grant's target ares include Chenango Street between Court and Henry streets, Henry Street between Chenango and State streets, and State Street between Henry and Lewis streets.

Mayor Matt Ryan says the grant will help enhance the city's efforts through the roundabout and streetscape improvements.

The money will will be used to help property owners improve and preserve historic facades, along with modifying interiors of residential and commercial buildings. This includes $15,000 just for a streetscape project to improve "Commercial Alley," which runs from Court Street to the State Street parking ramp.

The BLDC will host a free workshop for the grant program at 5 p.m., March 21, at the Broome County Library.
