Apalachin, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Even though Wandalyse Gonzalez is from the Bronx, Megan Ferree and Zach Burczynski said she's like their own kid.

"We take her up to (Megan's) grandparent's place in the Adirondacks and my grandfather and mother were just here yesterday, so she's part of the family," Burczynski said.

The sixth-grader has been visiting the Apalachin family since 2010 as part of the Fresh Air Fund. It's a nonprofit organization that gives city kids a chance to stay with a host family in Greater Binghamton and get a taste of the country, usually in the summertime.

"It's a great feeling," said Ferree. "I know that the kids get a lot of the experience, but also the host families really come away with so much."

Gonzalez and the couple have bonded so much, they scheduled a special trip this weekend. Gonzalez baked sugar cookies and went sledding for the first time.

"We had a lot of fun," Gonzalez said.
