A final harvest

Town of Vestal, N.Y. (WBNG Binghamton) Hundreds of Binghamton University students, faculty and volunteers have been growing produce at the Bunn Hill Garden for the past six months.

Potatoes, zucchini, carrots and other vegetables have gone toward meals served at the College in the Woods Dining Hall throughout the season.

Thursday was harvest day, where volunteers picked the last of the produce and began to reset the garden for next season.

Although this was the inaugural year of the project, organizers were impressed with how the season went.

"It was kind of just a pilot year. We wanted to see what would grow, what wouldn't and how successful we could be and it has been so far an enormous success," Jillian Shotwell, a student manager of the project, said.

The project was so successful that organizers intend to increase their produce next year, as well as tending a pear and apple orchard.

"We're actually going to double our produce that's going to campus next year, so we might do two beds of the same thing instead of just one, just so we can have a bigger mass of one item," Shotwell explained.

There will be a special harvest festival meal in the dining hall Thursday night, featuring all locally farmed meat and produce.
