Town of Geddes, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Great New York State Fair is underway just outside of Syracuse.

Many families from the Southern Tier visit or compete in Fair activities, and we'll be bringing you a series of reports this week on what the Fair has to offer.

This has been the perfect day for the Fair, and a welcome change from the weather of the weekend.

All the fair favorites are here for you to see -- the butter sculpture, the rides, the food, and the people.

If you come up here you'll more than likely bump in to someone you know from home -- we did!

Chances are you'll have lunch with them at the many eateries here with home-grown New York food.

The dollar baked potato booth, fried dough and sweet roasted corn are favorites.

Over the last few days, attendance at the Fair has been down.

Only 27,000 people visited on Sunday.

While Syracuse didn't see the effects of Irene outside of some rain showers, it did prevent people from traveling here. Remember -- this is a statewide event.

But with the Fair running through Labor Day, the hope is to get New Yorkers here to support the local economy.

Over the next few days we'll talk to local people who have made the journey up here, and the many reasons why they choose the NYS Fair as their vacation destination to say goodbye to summer.
