Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Vestal is beefing up its security at the Vestal Highway Department after being robbed of scrap metal twice by the same person.

The town of Vestal spent more than $5,000 on a video security system in and around the Vestal Highway Department building on Glenwood Road.

Vestal Supervisor John Schaffer says the highway department was first robbed last summer, when the man stole thousands of dollars worth of manhole covers.

The man was arrested and spent 3 months in jail.

Schaffer says after he was released from jail, he returned to the department and tried to steal more scrap. He was arrested again.

Schaffer says increasing the security with the new cameras will help keep track of all of the land on the property.

"The area can't be fenced in because of the size of it. Our current equipment was inadequate to handle the job. Now we went out and bought new cameras and equipment for our property that shows you everything that's going on and shows you everything 24/7," Schaffer said.

Schaffer says the Vestal Police Department are also stepping up patrols along Glenwood Road.
