Town of Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Fraternity and sorority pledging is put on hold at Binghamton University as school leaders investigate a rash of allegations over hazing.

According to a letter sent out to all Greek chapter presidents, Binghamton University is implementing a cease and desist order for all pledging, new member education, intake and recruitment programs.

In the letter, the Dean of Students Office says the university has received "an alarmingly high number of serious hazing complaints this spring."

The office says while it regrets having to take such extreme action, student safety is too important to ignore while an investigation is launched.

Hazing is a violation of Binghamton University's Code of Conduct, and also a crime punishable by state and federal law.

So far no one has been charged with hazing, but the school says it won't hesitate to do so, depending on what it finds in its investigation.
