Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Back to school shopping can be a stressful time of year for many parents. Local business in Broome County reached out to families who may be feeling the stress of back to school shopping.

Many elementary and middle schools have issued lists of necessary school supplies that dictate every detail, down to the brand of the crayons.

Lauren Coringrato, manager of the Vestal Target, said these lists make for even more headaches during an already taxing time.

Items that teachers have requested include specific types of calculators, brands of pencils, as well as binders, folders and notebooks in certain colors pertaining to each class.

Ed Isenberg, the manager of Olum's in Vestal, said he understands the pressure parents face to afford back to school necessities. That's why the department store, along with Whirlpool and Staples, will host its annual Kid's Day on Saturday, August 23.

In addition to games, activities and other fun for the children, Olum’s will offer 300 free backpacks filled with school supplies to children ages four to 16.

“We want to take a little stress away from the families and give away the backpacks. The event is well received every year,” Isenberg said.

The event will run from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The backpack giveaway will begin at noon.

Isenberg said children who would like a backpack should arrive at the start of the event.
