Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Spirits were high outside of the Walmart in Vestal in a last pitch effort led by Catholic Charities to collect enough turkeys for Thanksgiving.

Catholic Charities said early Friday morning, they were short about 600 turkeys, with a goal of collecting 3,400 turkeys for local residents.

But after setting up outside of Walmart, the donations came pouring in, some even donating fourteen turkeys at one time.

"Twelve hours ago, I was ready to go out and purchase turkeys if we needed them," said Kathy Pfaffenbach of Catholic Charities. "I had to because we promised them to the people. And now, we don't have to do that. The community responded, and then some."

Pfaffenbach said she is confident they have collected even more than their goal.

The organization will be collecting turkeys until midnight in front of Walmart. However, Catholic Charities will be collecting all sorts of donations up until Thanksgiving.

Deliveries to local families and churches will begin Saturday.
