The Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The fate of the Chenango Valley-Chenango Forks school district merger is now in the hands of the community.

The boards of education from both districts voted and approved a measure Monday night to bring the issue to the voters.

"It's the democratic process and it's very important," said Gerald Abbey, president of the CV school board.

CV voted unanimously and CF voted 3-2 in favor of handing the decision over to the taxpayers.

"We're pretty confident that that's how the vote would go," said Abbey. "In the past, we've talked and everyone has been for having the public make the decision and not stop it at the board level."

The decision will now be in a straw vote. That's a non-binding vote the community will get to make. If that vote receives a yes in each district, there will then be a statutory vote.

That will be the permanent vote also made by the community.

CF debated about some of the missing numbers from the merger study.

"Hopefully these numbers are going to come in soon," said Spyros Dimatos, a member of the CF school board. "We're going to do our best to educate the public and give them the correct numbers and let them make the decision. The board has spoken."

The straw vote will take place Dec. 3 at both schools.
