Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Catholic Charities of Broome County celebrated the start of their Health Home Program.
They said they now offer a more extensive approach, since medicaid was reworked by the state.
The organization originally served mental health patients, but now their ability to cover services has expanded, taking on more patients and a larger case load.
"We've had several people comment to us that they appreciate the help especially in regards to medical services," said Julie Smith of Catholic Charities of Broome County. "In the past that wasn't necessarily our focus."
Smith said before their expansion, if someone had diabetes, they could refer them to a doctor but they couldn't provide care.
Now they can.
Catholic Charities of Broome County has been chosen as a Lead Agency under the New York state plan.
Smith said the quality and complexity of their care has since improved.
