Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Despite earlier decisions from the New York State Department of Transportation, Chenango Street in Binghamton will be open for most of the summer.
The NYSDOT initially planned to close the heavily traveled street for four to six months during construction around southbound Interstate 81.
They decided this week to limit closures to four separate projects, which will close the road for approximately four days.
"I own a business. If the street were closed, it would be very difficult for the people who come to patronize my establishment. So, I'm glad the state and the city have come together to accommodate the needs of the businesses and residences both," Chenango Street resident Kirk Eschback said.
The DOT expects the street to be closed May 6 through May 9 for partial demolition of I-81.
