Sayre, PA (WBNG Binghamton) Fundraising for a new cancer center gets a million dollar boost from a major employer.

Guthrie officials kicked off the "Building Healthier Communities" public fundraising campaign Wednesday with a $1.5 million gift from the Corning Incorporated Foundation for the new cancer center at Corning Hospital.

Guthrie has already raised $1.5 million through private fundraising, including $375,000 from hospital employees and physicians.

Guthrie hopes to raise $1 million more during their public fundraising phase.

The groundbreaking for the new hospital was held in April of 2012 at a site located along I-86 in the Town of Corning. The new facility will be 232,000 square feet, two stories high and will have 65 private patient rooms. Officials said the hospital has an environmentally friendly design to save energy.

The cancer center will be located on the first floor of the hospital with a private entrance for patients.

The cancer center is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014.
