Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) By April of 2016, the Broome Developmental Center will be no more.

State officials laid out a plan Friday to close the center in Binghamton and three others across the state in the coming years.

It's all part of a plan to deinstitutionalize those with developmental disabilities and integrates them more into the community.

Officials with the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities said those with developmental disabilities will live much fuller lives this way.

Thirteen other states are completely deinstitutionalized, with 10 states down to one institution.

State officials said workers displaced by the move will have opportunities to work in other state-operated programs.
