Town of Fenton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The woman killed in an early morning fire has been identified.

New York State Police say Barbara Cadwell, 71, died in the blaze. They initially said the woman's last name was spelled "Caldwell."

Firefighters arrived at 311 Tunnel Road around 4:29 a.m. to find the home engulfed in flames. State police say Cadwell was the only one at home at the time the fire broke out. The Broome County Real Property website shows Cadwell as the home's owner.

It took hours to fully extinguish the fire. Once crews had it under control, Cadwell's remains were found inside.

Cadwell died from smoke inhalation, according to a state police news release that cited an autopsy performed this morning at Lourdes Hospital. The woman's manner of death was ruled accidental. Investigators believe the fire started as a result of a wood stove.

The Broome County Fire Investigation Team, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and the Broome County Coroner’s Office are assisting in the investigation.

Departments from Sanitaria Springs, Port Crane and Harpursville were called to the scene.
