Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) One woman is dead following a house fire just north of Broome Community College.
Responders arrived quickly to 21 South Morningside Drive in the Town of Chenango, just near the Dickinson town line and Broome Community College.
Around 5:30 this morning, a security system fire alarm alerted the departments.
When they arrived shortly after, they found 86 year-old Martha St. John dead in the living room.
That's where they believe the fire started from smoking materials that ignited other items in the room.
Neighbors say they're shocked and saddened.
"Damage to the house looks like it's mostly room and content -- one room, possible extension in to another room -- not too much," said Derin Krack, Chenango Fire Department chief.
"There are a lot of elderly people who live in this neighborhood. A lot of people have been here twenty, thirty years like us. It's a family type atmosphere here...It's just very upsetting to everybody when something like this happens," said Michael Urda, a neighbor.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office says that St. John died of smoke inhalation. She was the only person home at the time of the fire.
