Former Binghamton Parks and Recreation director pleads guilty to grand larceny
Binghamton, N.Y. (WBNG Binghamton) The former director of the Binghamton City Parks and Recreation Department plead guilty to grand larceny in the third degree. 72-year old John Whalen admitted to stealing thousands of dollars from the city from January 1, 2007 through November 27, 2012. Whalen was the director for 42 years. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Whalen will be sentenced to state prison for one to four years, unless he pays full restitution of more than $79,000 back to the city. The money must be paid before or at the time of his sentencing, which is scheduled for July 24. If Whalen does pay in full, he will instead be sentenced to six months in Broome County Jail with a $5,000 fine. Then he will have either a five year probation or a three year conditional discharge.
