Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Three South Central New York Planned Parenthood locations offered free HIV tests Monday, in recognition of World AIDS Day.

More than one million Americans are living with HIV, but only one in five are aware that they are infected.

It's important to get tested to keep you and your loved ones safe while allowing you to better plan your healthcare for the future, said Planned Parenthood Director of Communications Ingrid Husisian.

"People all over the world are learning more about how to stay healthy, how to protect themselves, the importance of getting tested and what to do with the test results," she said.

The tests are confidential and results could come within 20 minutes.

Free contraception was also available for patients.

AIDS has claimed about 1.7 million American lives since the first cases were reported in 1981.
