(WBNG Binghamton) New storm recovery funding will help the Southern Tier continue to rebuild from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that about $35 billion in federal aid is available for New York communities devastated by recent natural disasters.
The money will help communities develop comprehensive and innovative plans through a bottom up approach.
"Rather than the federal government telling the state, telling the county, and we dictate what is done, the bottom up is, we go to the communities and we say to the communities, you tell us what you need to restore your community," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
The money will be given to communities based on damage assessed by FEMA and their population.
Binghamton is eligible for up to $3 million.
Conklin, the Town of Union, Vestal and Johnson City are eligible for up to $5.4 million.
Nichols and Owego are eligible for up to $4.4 million.
The aid will be awarded for the projects once the Department of Housing and Urban Development approves the community's plan.
