Hurricane Irene: Walton

Sections of State Route 206 near Walton were shut down Sunday evening.

Water spilled over onto the road making it impassable.

Neighbors stood along Delaware street in the Town to see the Delaware River rushing.

The Red Cross set up relief stations at Walton High School and the United Presbyterian Church in anticipation of people needing the evacuate their homes Sunday evening.

"We can take up to 100 people. We can feed them and we can house them and take care of their immediate needs," Chuck Haupt, Red Cross Coordinator.

Officials say they are expecting the river to crest up to 16.5 feet shortly after midnight in Walton.

Water is over the Kingston Street Bridge and Bridge Street are closed.

The Walton Fire Department will be canvassing low lying areas recommending evacuation.

NYSEG is shutting off all power for safety purposes.
