Hurricane Irene: Red Cross Opens Shelters

Binghamton, NY — August 28, 2011 American Red Cross disaster volunteers from throughout the South Central New York Region are in Broome and Delaware Counties to help open and staff emergency shelters throughout that county.

9 shelters have been opened to receive area residents who have been flooded out of their homes or who have lost power.

Arkville Fire Department
Margaretville Fire Department
Deposit Fire Department
Walton United Presbyterian Church

* The Andes Fire Department is accepting residents from the town of Fleishmans which has been evacuated due to wide scale flooding

Red Cross shelters provide residents with a warm, dry place to stay and food to eat until they are able to return to their homes or other arrangements can be made to accommodate them. On an ongoing basis, the Red Cross volunteers will continue to work with county emergency management personnel and open shelters as needed throughout the region.
