Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Village of Owego is officially the latest municipality to say "no" to hydrofracking.

The Village Board has approved a moratorium on fracking that, according to Mayor Kevin Millar, will take effect immediately.

We talked with the mayor over the phone, and he said he is glad the planning board presented the idea to the village board.

He said over the coming year, he hopes to discuss the concerns of residents on heavy industry within their borders.

The decision was made after a public hearing Monday evening.

The village joins other area municipalities, like the Towns of Dryden and Middlefield and City of Binghamton, to prohibit the practice.
