Ithaca, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Ithaca Police Department is searching for a driver who ran off after a serious head-on crash involving the Police Chief.
The crash happened on Thursday, June 12 around 5:25 p.m.
Police Chief John R. Barber was traveling east on West Clinton Street in an unmarked 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe when a 2000 Subaru Legacy driving west went into his lane, and struck his vehicle, according to police.
Barber got out of his car, and gathered information regarding the crash.
The driver of the Subaru Legacy, Christopher Rundt, 23, of Ithaca, spoke briefly to Barber, apologizing for turning in front of him.
When Chief Barber called 911 and looked for witnesses of the crash, Rundt and passenger of the Subaru fled the area on foot.
Investigations found the 2000 Subaru Legacy to be registered to an uninvolved third party. Police also turned up an opened bottle of rum in the front seat.
The female passenger is believed to be Ashley Woodward.
Witnesses in the area told investigators that Rundt appeared to be intoxicated when he got out of his car.
Chief Barber received minor injuries. He was treated at the scene and did not seek further medical attention.
Both cars received major damage.
According to Ithaca Police, Rundt is on parole through New York State.
Criminal charges against him are pending and police are involved in an active search to locate him.
Officers also would like to speak to Woodward regarding the crash.
