(WBNG Binghamton) Budget belts continue to tighten for local municipalities. That means some are considering cuts to the bare minimum for public service departments like your local fire department.
Senator Charles Schumer is working with the House to make sure funding for both paid and volunteer departments have the money they need to operate up to code.
The National Defense Authorization Act passed Tuesday night. In that, the senate added an amendment to continue to improve grants for local fire departments like the Assistance to Firefighters Grants AFG and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response SAFER programs.
Within those programs local fire departments have received money to hire staffing they wouldn't otherwise have been able to afford.
"We're trying to have more non-matched funding available as possible because we know the Fire Departments and surrounding communities are hard pressed financially," said Senator Charles Schumer.
Local departments added they're happy about the push for more funding, but are concerned about possibly having to match dollar amounts.
