Nichols, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A local racino gears up for the kick off of their 8th live harness racing season.

Tioga Downs Racetrack and Casino welcomed the media from all across the Southern Tier to preview the upcoming season Tuesday night.

The live harness racing season kicks off at 5 p.m. with 10 races on Saturday, May 4.

Saturday is also Kentucky Derby Day, where there will be special races and contests.

A harness driver of almost 30 years says watching horses race is an art form.

"These horses are athletes, they're real athletes. You have to appreciate the animal. It's just a good night out. It's a great sport. It's a wonderful sport," said John Kent, of Buffalo.

Opening night is free.
