Kirkwood man charged in crash that killed professor

Gates, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A Kirkwood man is charged with manslaughter after a fatal, head-on crash on Interstate 490.

A judge arraigned Thomas Rome, 37, of Kirkwood Tuesday afternoon.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said that on Saturday morning, Dec. 7, they responded to call about a car headed in the wrong direction on the expressway in Gates.

Deputies said Rome's car hit another vehicle, driven by Tatiana Tchekina, 69, of Rochester.

Tchekina died as a result of the crash and her husband was injured.

Paramedics took the injured and unconscious Rome to Strong Hospital.

Deputies said he smelled of alcohol.

Rome is charged with second degree vehicular manslaughter, operating a vehicle the wrong way on a controlled highway, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.

Deputies said he is being held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.

According to deputies, his condition is satisfactory.

Tchekina was a professor at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.
