Village of Sherburne, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Sherburne is cleaning up and preparing for future flooding after water swept across roads in the village.
Village Mayor Bill Acee says the recovery from the flood waters started Friday and continued into the weekend by surveying roads, putting up small power lines and pumping water out of homes.
Acee says approximately five inches of rain pounded Sherburne Thursday night, leaving the community with flash floods and the flooding of the Chenango River.
"The downtown flooding is something that has occurred many times in the past. Sadly, I'm not sure how we can fix that," Acee said. "I'm expecting these weather problems to continue, so that's something we're just going to have to deal with."
Acee says now is the time to prepare for future flooding.
"I think we'll try to build up some banks on those streams, that's probably the most important thing we can do right now," Acee said.
He says the village and county will continue to monitor the river, creeks and streams.
