Local teacher named "Hometown Hero"

Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A local elementary school teacher is recognized as a hometown hero.

Kate Luke is a teacher at Benjamin Franklin Elementary.

During halftime of the Binghamton University/Vermont basketball game Sunday afternoon, she was named the winner of the Dunkin' Donuts Hometown Hero Contest after being nominated by two former students.

"It really means a lot to me that my former students think so highly of me and it's an honor everyday to work with them and inspire them," said Luke.

The prize honors a local educator every year with a years worth of coffee.

Luke has been working at Benjamin Franklin for more than a decade.

She said she loves her job at the school and calls her students her motivation.

The Hometown Hero contest has been around for three years.
