Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Community members gathered to honor a Binghamton cultural icon.

Fritz Wallenberg is best known for starting what is today known as the Binghamton Philharmonic.

Members of the music community met in the park of his namesake at the corner of Schubert and Hayden streets

Those in attendance planted a total of seven trees to honor his name and beautify the area.

The hope is the trees will be there for people to enjoy for many years to come.

"Generations from now, some child will sit under this tree, or maybe, you know, someone will come with their instrument and play in the park," said Connie Sternberg of Owego.

There are plans to add benches and possibly a water fountain, but Sternberg said it all depends on donations.
