Town of Clay, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Town of Clay community is still suffering as police continue their investigation into the tragic stabbing of a mother and the rape of her 10-year-old daughter.

Police say David J. Renz, 29, of Cicero, kidnapped Lori Bresnahan, 47, a library media specialist with the Liverpool School District, and her daughter Saturday night in front of the Great Northern Mall in the Town of Clay.

The two were leaving a gymnastics class just before 9 p.m. when the suspect bound Bresnahan and her child in Bresnahan's car.

"The suspect bound the woman and raped the child in her vehicle and then drove the victim's car a short distance to Verplank Road in the Town of Clay," said New York State Police Captain Mark Lincoln. "The child was able to flee the vehicle and was assisted by a passing motorist."

Lincoln said Bresnahan was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where she was later pronounced dead.

The suspect headed into nearby woods and police found him near the area.

Renz is charged with first degree rape, first degree kidnapping, first and second degree murder.

All charges are felonies.

Renz was previously charged for possessing child porn.

According to court documents, he had more than 100 gigabytes worth of child porn on an encrypted hard drive.

He was released from custody in January.

Police say there is no sign Renz knew the victims.

The child is being treated at a hospital for her injuries.

A Facebook page in honor of Bresnahan has been created.
