Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton Mayoral candidate Ed Hickey is "a bar guy."

At least, that was his response to questions about his 2012 DWI arrest.

According the Binghamton City Court documents, the Republican candidate was arrested and charged on March 15, 2012, for driving while intoxicated.

Hickey was stopped just after 1 a.m. when his car hit a street sign on State Street and went over a curb.

Court documents show Hickey admitted to drinking for nine hours before driving.

Officer Kevin Brown reported Hickey had bloodshot, glossy eyes and he could smell a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

Brown also said Hickey's speech was slurred and that he failed a field sobriety test. He was subsequently arrested for the misdemeanor.

"I'm a bar guy," Hickey said. "I'm a guy that wants to take Binghamton back from the politicians that have ruined it. It's been 36 years since a normal guy ran for office. I'm normal. I've made my mistakes in my past, I'm going to make them in the future, but I've learned from them.

"I'm a new Ed," he said. "Anything that happened when I was drinking, I'll plead guilty to all of it."

The DWI case is still open in Binghamton City Court.

Hickey says he no longer drinks or smokes, and has learned from his mistakes.
