Memorial Race Gains Momentum

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) An annual event designed to promote healthy living and raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving continues to build momentum each year.

The Chris Thater Memorial may have started small, but at 28 years strong, its grown into one of the most premiere competitions of its kind.

It attracts 1,200 athletes from across the world to participate in a 5K run and professional cycling.

More than 10,000 will watch as men and women ride through the neighborhoods on the city's west side.

There's also an expo featuring 40 vendors, and a 2 day music festival.

"No matter what's going on, you can listen to music, watch a race, food, expo, there's a little something for everybody at the Chris Thater," said Jim May, Founder and Coordinator of the event. "... And it's all for a good cause."

All the action kicks off at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday August 27, 2011.

The women's professional cycling race is at 5:00 p.m. that day.

The 5 K race is Sunday morning at 10:00, followed by the men's professional race at 11:30 a.m.
