NYSBA Awards WBNG for Flood Coverage, Sports

(WBNG Binghamton) A group of peers in broadcasting recognize WBNG for excellence.

The New York State Broadcast Association awarded WBNG in three categories in its competition group.

On the evening of September 8, 2011 Action News coverage 24 hours after historic flooding began included an overview of the devastation from the air and the stories of the people impacted, emergency responders, and volunteers on the ground.

The entry won for Best Locally Originated Newscast..

A month later, WBNG presented a one hour special "Looking Back, Moving Forward." It explored what happened, told the stories of first responders and people picking up pieces of their lives. Local leaders participated in a round table discussion on what was needed to recover and for future flood prevention.

The entry won Best Public Affairs Program or Series.

The winning entry for Best Sportscast included a the story of a blind golfer and how he can enjoy the sport with a little help from a friend that aired on July 28, 2011.

The awards were judged by the Missouri Broadcasters Association and presented at the NYSBA Awards Banquet in Lake George Monday evening.

WBNG will continue work to bring the Twin Tiers award-winning coverage in the future.
