Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) - A vacant seat on the town of Union council was filled Friday.

Leonard Cicciarelli, of Endwell, was sworn in as a council member at a special meeting.

Cicciarelli had served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the past year and had to give up that position before joining the council.

His business experience will help him as a council member, he said.

"I believe I am objective," Cicciarelli said. "I've been in management for 15 years anyway, so I see a lot of different viewpoints. I see the employees' viewpoints, I see the owners' viewpoints and I always try to intermingle and find the best middle ground for everyone."

He is looking forward to taking action as a board member, but will seek guidance from other members during his transition, he said.

"I have some thoughts, but until I get to that point, I better rely on the board to assist me in the right direction," he said. "And again, I believe they are on the right direction so I trust that."

Ciciarelli is filling the seat vacated by Rose Sotak when she became town supervisor.

They have similar priorities for the town, Sotak said.

"He has that base that I do about economic development," she said. "That's very important to me right now. That's a main agenda for the town of Union."

The board is required to take another look at his position next year, but Sotak said she believes he'll be reappointed.
