Richford, NY (WBNG Binghamton) There was no need for Richford residents to evacuate Thursday evening for flooding concerns despite alerts sent by the Tioga County Sheriff's office.
The Tioga County Sheriff's office said in a news release sent Thursday night that officials were preparing to notify residents of concerns surrounding the Valley View Pond dam.
As a result, a message being programmed into the county's reverse 911 system was sent by accident to residents in and around Richford.
The message told them to evacuate and it was a mistake.
Members of the sheriff's department, county emergency management officials and county legislators met Thursday evening with residents to explain the situation and address concerns.
On Friday morning, the Richford Fire Department started the process of siphoning water from the Valley View Pond to further reduce the water hazard at the dam.
The Berkshire Fire Department and Newark Valley Fire Department were assisting.
