Sheriff: Former O-A union treasurer stole $51K

Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The treasurer of the Owego-Apalachin Employees Association is accused of embezzling more than $50,000.

The Tioga County Sheriff's Office arrested Amy Wales, 45, of Owego, on Dec. 10.

The OAEA is one of three unions in the district; it is comprised of district support staff. Wales is a secretary in the district's athletic department.

The Criminal Investigation Division conducted a three-month investigation into the alleged embezzlement of funds from the OAEA. Wales was the union treasurer. The investigation found more than $50,000 was taken during the past year.

Wales is charged with grand larceny, which is a felony.

She was arraigned in Owego Village Court and released on her own recognizance. Wales is due back in village court Dec. 17.

The Owego Apalachin Employee's Association president sent out a letter to colleagues and friends about the incident. He said what happened is "a very painful development in the history of the union."
