Town of Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The town of Owego approved plans to build a dog park in a portion of Hickories Park.

The town board approved the plans with a unanimous vote.

The dog park will be the first one of its kind in Tioga County.

Members of the Owego Dog Owners Group (ODOG) proposed the new park to the Owego Town Board and are now finalizing their plans.

The approval is contingent on paperwork requested by the town from ODOG on its final plan.

Group member Nancy Eckstrom said there is a need for a dog park since the only ones available are either in Broome County or Tompkins County.

"We frequent the one in Ithaca," Eclstrom said, "But, I'd like to spend my money here. When I go to the dog park in Ithaca, that's where I spend my money. I'd like to have a dog park locally."

The money to build the park is being donated by Adam and Ben Weitsman, whose sister Rebecca loved dogs, but died of cancer.

The park is currently closed for repairs.

The group hopes the new park can be ready by next spring.
