Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Some Owego Free Academy students are spending lots of time in the "shop" making toys. It's a part of a special holiday project to help kids who are in the hospital.

Santa's workshop has its elves but kids at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital will have a different group to thank this holiday season.

"We are making wooden airplanes," said David Conti, student.

A special education class at Owego Free Academy created "Project TOY".

"Toy is 'Thinking of You'," explained Hunter Szabo, student.

30 handmade wooden airplanes are being made by the class and shipped out to the hospital this holiday season.

"It's to make kids feel good," said Tim Vanderpool, student.

Students have been working on the airplanes since September. They hope to have them finished by mid-November.

"Our goal is to put a smile on somebody else's face," said Don Shultz, Teacher, "There's all sorts of education going on in the class. There's ruler reading, problem solving and machine safety but the biggest benefit of my class is to to teach the kids responsible citizenship, in and out of the classroom. This is a great community service project."

The kids are making the planes from start to finish. This includes cutting the lumber to size, sanding it with the saw and then hand-sanding the rest and putting on the wheels.

"We have to make them safe. We have to make sure for whoever does receive these toys. The kids have to understand safety is of utmost importance," said Shultz.

Teachers say the kids seem to really be enjoying the class and are always smiling while they are working.

"They really like to help other kids. When you ask then what they are doing, we're making other kids feel better. It's really cool," said Rosa Chaluisant, Special Education Teacher.

"They've been very enthusiastic about the project. It's showing them a lot of skills on woodworking so it's good for them," said Angel Starr, Assigned Aide.
