Town of Maine, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Teachers took the stage at Maine Memorial Thursday morning for a rendition of "The Wizard of Oz" to kick off the school's new reading program.
They sang and danced in the performance to send the message to students, "If you can read, you can succeed".
This year the school's building planning team embarked on a reading initiative with a goal to provide free books for students.
"Putnam Publishing had donated some books to us and we've collected over two-thousand books this year. What will do is we'll have the books shelves set up. Students will be able to come every week and bring a book home and they'll be able to keep it," said Jennifer Lis, Literacy Specialist.
Maine Memorial does a read performance annually based on the curriculum.
The purpose is to help the kids develop a love of reading, especially those who don't have access to books outside of school.
