Vestal, NY (WBNG) Binghamton) Friends and family of Shelby Jenkins filled the front lawn of her home Friday to honor her life.

It was a beautiful summer night, but there was only one thing on the minds of the dozens of people there -- Shelby.

Candles and fresh flowers decorated the yard as people embraced over the loss of their friend, and signed posters with loving thoughts and memories.

Jenkins was killed early Thursday morning. Police found her unconscious in the basement of her alleged killer's home.

She was taken to Wilson Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her classmates say losing their best friend at such a young age is shocking, but tonight they remember her for her laughter and strength.

"She was always happy and smiling," said Adriana Irish. "She could really brighten up a room."

"She was a great mother, she did everything for her child," said Emily Crotsely. "I respect her so much. I look up to her so much after that."

Police arrested her boyfriend, Steven Lipka, 19. He is charged with second degree murder.
