Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Democratic mayoral candidate Teri Rennia calls her economic development outlook a "complete city plan."
Rennia said infrastructure is the foundation for businesses to move to the city and safety will only attract more development.
Those are two factors in her plan five-point plan she released Thursday.
Rennia said downtown has seen an upswing in business and there's no reason why that can't catch on throughout the rest of the city.
She's proposing neighborhood-specific development teams that will personalize the needs for each district. She said those teams need to bring in a variety of economic development.
"I think we need to be appealing to a wide variety of industry and I think when we do that, the other businesses, the ancillary businesses, will follow as we've seen downtown," said Rennia.
In her focus is redeveloping the city's vacant industrial lots.
She said with the help of state and federal funds, those lots can be turned into an opportunity to bring new businesses to Binghamton.
Rennia said the city is marketing some of those opportunities, but only to companies in the city.
"We need to be casting a wider net," said Rennia. "We need to be marketing them regionally and even nationally. We need to let businesses know that there are brownfield opportunities with the state, money for funding, for cleanup costs, to help them get started here in the city."
Rennia said marketing is the key to her entire economic plan.
She said Binghamton needs to proactively market itself to bring in the development the city needs to prosper.
Republican candidate Rich David says the city needs to seek more state and federal resources to cleanup brownfields to make them shovel ready, rather than solely focus on the ones that are ready for development.
David said as small business owner, the keys to stimulating the economy are a safe, clean, affordable city with a business friendly City Hall.
