(WBNG Binghamton) Tioga County Health Department released a list of tips to make sure you and your family are prepared for Hurricane Sandy.

The Health Department says to have a lot of drinking water available. They say to bottle water in empty containers and stock up your refrigerator and freezer.

They recommend having a three day supply of nonperishable foods like: peanut butter, canned goods with easy off lids, ready to eat meats and quick snacks.

Also, to make sure all medication is stored and readily available. All important documents and emergency contacts should be with you at all times.

In the event of a power outage, have flashlights and battery operated radios on hand, and extra batteries. If you have a generator, do not use it in the garage or house. Using a generator in the house can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

They stress to make sure that children and relatives with special needs are getting the care that they need.

Most importantly, follow all orders of emergency personnel to protect yourself, your family and first responders. If an evacuation is ordered, evacuate and report to a nearby shelter.
