Town of Chenango, NY (WBNG Binghamton) New York State Police arrested Alex Vandermark, 18, of Port Crane, for allegedly breaking into Chenango Forks High School sometime between late June 6 and early June 7.
Vandermark is charged with burglary in the third degree.
State Police said Vandermark dressed up in a skeleton mask and dark clothing, went into the school and released hundreds of crickets, along with a school owned chinchilla. He is also accused of putting rubber cement on several chairs and locks in what police say is an apparent end-of-year prank.
Vandermark was arraigned in Town of Chenango Court and released on his own recognizance.
On June 7, a teacher discovered an open door at the high school. A review of security video showed who police believe to be Vandermark entering several classrooms with what troopers said were suspicious looking items.
The break-in caused the Chenango Forks School District to dismiss students and staff from all schools.
In a statement, Superintendent Lloyd “Joe” Peck said, “We are pleased that this incident has come to a close without further disruption to the education of our students. I would like to thank students and staff for their cooperation."
