(WBNG Binghamton) Sen. Charles Schumer is raising concerns about U.S.-grown chicken that's processed in China.
The senator said this month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is allowing the sale of chickens that have been processed in China.
Schumer discussed the issue with the top Federal Food Safety Official about the unsanitary methods of China-based food sales.
According to the senator, China has a history of major health hazards from mislabeled meats.
Schumer says increased inspection of food plants in China is needed.
"If it's processed in China it should be labeled processed in China, so Americans can make a decision if they want to buy chicken, maybe it's a little cheaper if it's processed in China if it does not have the same safety standards of chicken raised here in America," said Schumer.
Schumer asked the department to delay importing chickens from China for six months until proper food inspections can be established.
