Town of Union, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer in America, making this year's Heart Walk just as important as year's past.

The local branch of the American Heart Association kicked off its launch party Wednesday at Jonathan's Fine Food and Spirits in the Town of Union. The 24th annual Southern Tier Heart Walk will be held April 28 at Binghamton University.

But first, the party. Dozens gathered to listen to survivors' stories and volunteers' journeys. Lisa Mascato, 28, of Cincinnatus, had a heart attack three years ago. And it changed her life forever.

"I promised myself that I would never give myself the chance to be the cause of another heart attack.," Mascato said.
