Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The season of everything strawberry has returned to Owego.
The thousands of festival fans who turned out this year couldn't go too far without spotting the delectable fruit, -- or at least something strawberry flavored.
Vendors sold strawberry kettle corn, strawberry lemonade and strawberry milkshakes.
But of course, the treat that keeps people coming back -- strawberry shortcakes.
"I think everyone, just like they love ice cream, everyone loves strawberry shortcakes," said Orville Wright, of the Owego Rotary Club.
Since the strawberry festival started 30years ago, the Rotary Club has been making the simple yet delicious dessert.
No matter how big the festival gets, they will always be a key ingredient.
"I wanna get a strawberry shortcake," is an often uttered phrase down Owego's Main and Front streets this weekend.
In addition to the festival's staples, new features are bringing a little spice to the mix with a highlight of the Southern Tier.
"I think it's important to keep changing and expanding and see what works," Wright said.
New this year are locally made beer and spirits, which are now served in the wine tent.
"It's nice because they've always had the wine, but it's nice that they've branched out because it's gotten really popular here in the finger lakes," said Cody Marvin, of Finger Lakes Distilling. "The micro breweries and the micro distilling."
Organizers say they expected a busy weekend, considering the previous weeks' persistent rain. So, they'll be sure to provide something for everyone, from the old traditions to the new treats.
