Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Johnson City Mayor Dennis Hannon is calling for Village Trustees to resign after a vote to suspend a freeze on Village spending.
The village board approved two measures Hannon says will cost taxpayers.
The first suspends a spending and hiring freeze the village placed on itself in August.
The second hired four new police officers.
Those who voted in favor say the new officers will replace those retiring, and their salaries will be less expensive.
Though Mayor Hannon says the extra help is not needed and that more officers will cost the village millions of dollars in the long-term.
"I believe with the retirees that we had, and the current ones who are going to retire this year, that will keep that part of the budget neutral. It's the retro and the increase each year that we have to fund for," said Bruce King, (R) Johnson City Trustee.
"Tonight was a very sad day for the people of Johnson City who just can't absorb anymore tax increases and all I can say now is get your wallets out because what's coming is not going to be good," said Dennis Hannon, (D) Johnson City Mayor.
Hannon expects the board of trustees to draft and approve legislation to lift the tax levy cap at its next regular meeting.
He says he will vote against it.
