Syracuse laboratory falsifies reports for village of Endicott
(WBNG Binghamton) An East Syracuse laboratory pleaded guilty to falsifying 3,300 soil and water tests including some in the village of Endicott. Upstate Labs, Inc., of East Syracuse, pleaded guilty to one charge of mail fraud in U.S,. District Court that included more than 3,000 incidents of false reports sent between 2008 and 2010. The falsified reports included tests done in 2009 at Endicott's wastewater treatment plant. Deputy mayor Dave Baker said the water supply was never at risk and that the village ceased their relationship with Upstate Labs as soon as the problems became public. "The proper way to look at this is Upstate Labs may have cut some corners a few times with various agencies they do work for and the got caught," Baker said. The village used Upstate Labs for several years to test its waste water for excessive levels of nitrogen or phosphorus which could endanger surrounding environments. The village ceased its work with Upstate in February after the lab lost its certification.
