New Milford Twp., PA (WBNG Binghamton) A teen walking to class Tuesday morning was hit and killed by a train less than a mile from the school.
Pennsylvania State police said Mahlon Christopher Mosher, 16, was killed by the train as he was making his way to Blue Ridge High School.
District officials say those tracks are located less than a mile from the school.
It happened around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in New Milford Township.
Troopers said Mosher was walking on the train tracks wearing headphones, and did not hear the train approaching, even as the train blew its horn.
Police said the train couldn't stop in time and hit Mosher with its front plow, killing him.
State police are ruling the teen's death an accident.
Blue Ridge Board of Education member Christina Whitney, who drops off her daughter at the high school, said it was normal to see Mosher walking from home each morning.
She also said the teen's death is heartbreaking.
"There's so many people that come to mind when I heard this," Whitney said. "This child and his family, but also the conductor, and so many people who interacted with this boy. A family has lost their teenager."
Whitney says grief counselors will be available to students Wednesday morning.
